Addressing Humidity-Induced Risks of High-Voltage Switchgear: Comprehensive Moisture Removal Strategies

Source:

High humidity causes condensation on high-voltage switchgear, leading to insulation damage and severe faults. Chongqing Sennan Electric proposes 9 solutions, including equipment cleaning, high-voltage room sealing, waterproofing cable trenches, installing dehumidifiers, and optimizing architectural design. These measures effectively mitigate moisture risks and ensure safe operation of electrical equipment.

In southern China, the autumn and winter seasons are characterized by poor lighting conditions, frequent precipitation, and relatively high air humidity, which has become a major headache for the operation and maintenance personnel of high-voltage switchgear. The humid environment poses significant safety hazards to the electrical equipment inside the high-voltage switchgear and is highly likely to trigger power accidents.

When the air humidity reaches a certain saturation level, the moist air will condense on the electrical equipment with lower temperatures. Moisture and condensation can lead to insulation damage of the switchgear, easily causing faults such as external insulation flashover breakdown to ground, internal insulation flashover breakdown to ground, phase-to-phase insulation flashover breakdown, lightning overvoltage flashover breakdown, insulator bushing pollution flashover/breakdown/explosion, lifting rod flashover, CT (Current Transformer) flashover/breakdown/explosion, and insulator fracture. Such faults may spread to adjacent cabinets, resulting in busbar voltage loss and extensive equipment damage. Faced with this situation, how to address the problem? Chongqing Sennan Electric believes that moisture removal for high-voltage switchgear in high-humidity environments should be carried out from the following aspects:
(1) Clean the electrical equipment inside the high-voltage switchgear during power outages to keep the interior of the switchgear clean.
(2) Seal the high-voltage room. Implement air filtration measures for the ventilation windows and vents of the high-voltage room in accordance with regulatory requirements to maintain clean air inside.
(3) Conduct waterproof sealing for the cable trenches, cable tunnels, and cable holes under the switchgear, and install natural ventilation and moisture exhaust channels to keep the air in the cable tunnels dry.
(4) Install SEPRI-CS-L industrial dehumidifiers in the high-voltage room to maintain dry air inside.
(5) The fixed steel plate for the outgoing wall bushing shall be installed at a distance of at least 100mm from the external wall surface along the center line of the wall. The gap between the fixed steel plate and the frame of the outgoing wall bushing shall be sealed with tinned high-voltage seals. The gap between the frame and the wall window shall be sealed with building waterproof materials.
(6) Improve the architectural design of the high-voltage room: add edge plates on the top of the high-voltage room roof and install canopies above the outgoing wall bushings.
(7) Timely eliminate roof leakage defects of the high-voltage room.
(8) Replace the iron plate at the bottom of the indoor enclosed bus duct for outgoing lines with a steel wire mesh plate, or open a 100mm horizontal gap (near the wall). When rainwater enters from the fixed steel plate of the outgoing wall bushing, it can be discharged through the gap without entering the switchgear.
(9) For switchgear with low insulation margin and poor operating environment, install SPR-CN-S1 intelligent dehumidifiers or top-mounted dehumidification devices, which can automatically control and remove moisture inside the cabinet based on humidity levels.
In summary, the electrical equipment inside high-voltage switchgear has high requirements for the operating environment. An excessively humid environment is prone to causing safety problems in the operation of electrical equipment. Timely adoption of moisture removal measures for high-voltage switchgear is of great significance for improving the power operation environment.
