Simplified International DC Charging Station Construction Guide

Source:

This guide outlines core requirements for cross-border DC fast charging station projects, aligned with IEC/ISO standards. Covering preliminary planning (policy, site/grid), design/construction, equipment selection, safety/compliance, and operation/maintenance, it emphasizes compatibility, safety, and regional adaptations. Key highlights include standard adherence, scalable equipment, and localized services, enabling reliable EV charging worldwide.

As electric vehicles (EVs) gain global popularity, DC Fast Chargers (DCFCs) have become essential infrastructure. This simplified guide outlines key requirements across five core areas, based on IEC, ISO, and regional standards, for cross-border projects.

I. Preliminary Planning
1. Policy & Compliance
Confirm local licensing (grid access, land use, environmental assessments) and incentive programs.
Adhere to global standards: IEC 62196-3/SAE J1772 Combo (charging interfaces) and OCPP 1.6J/2.0.1 (communication).
2. Site & Grid Assessment
Choose high-traffic locations (highways, commercial hubs) with accessible parking (≥2.5m width).
Match charger scale to users: 60-120kW for private cars (1:50 ratio), 200-480kW for commercial vehicles.
Verify grid capacity; add energy storage if needed.

II. Design & Construction
1. Electrical System
Use 380V/400V three-phase AC; install RCD, SPD, and flame-retardant cables (buried ≥0.7m) per IEC 61439.
Space chargers ≥1.5m apart; maintain ≥3m distance from buildings (per EN 13023).
Deploy EMS for large stations (≥10 chargers) to balance load and reduce costs.
2. Civil Works
Use C30+ concrete (≥150mm thick) with anti-slip surfaces; add snow-melting features in cold regions.
Design drainage (slope ≥2%) and fire safety (1x4kg extinguisher per 50㎡, ≥4m fire lanes).
Install fiber/4G/5G, bilingual signage, surveillance, and emergency buttons.

III. Equipment Selection
1. Core Requirements
Chargers: IP55 (IP65 for coasts), scalable power, Type 2 Combo + CCS1 compatibility.
Energy storage (optional): IEC 62196-compliant lithium-ion cabinets (1.2x station load), V2G support.
Backend system: OCPP-enabled, with remote monitoring, multi-payment support, and GDPR-compliant data management.
2. Certification & Suppliers
Mandatory certifications: CE (EU), UL 2202 (US), CCC (China), or CB for multi-region use.
Select ISO 9001/14001-certified suppliers with 2-year warranties and local after-sales.

IV. Safety & Compliance
Conduct quarterly insulation/ground tests (≥10MΩ, ≤4Ω) and annual third-party audits.
Equip emergency stop buttons; train staff with local electrical certifications.
Post safety warnings; recycle waste per Basel Convention; control noise (≤65dB day/55dB night).

V. Operation & Maintenance
Monitor utilization rates; address 0% efficiency issues.
Provide 24/7 multilingual support and accept international payments.
Follow maintenance schedule: weekly cleaning, quarterly terminal checks, annual software updates/battery tests.

VI. Regional Adaptations
Climate: High-temperature (shade + cooling), low-temperature (heating), coastal (corrosion-resistant materials).
Localization: Bilingual interfaces, regional payment methods, and culture-aligned service hours.
Conclusion: Prioritize compliance, compatibility, and safety. Adapt to local conditions while following global standards to deliver reliable EV charging services worldwide.
